Position: Medical Transportation Dispatcher (Emergency Medical Dispatcher)
Station: Moncton
Hours of Work: Casual positions; 12-hour rotating shift
Salary: Pay Grade 10, CUPE 1252 Collective Agreement - $22.7464 per hour
Duties of Position: Medical Communication Management Centre (MCMC) is responsible for the effective coordination of air and land ambulances throughout New Brunswick.
As a Medical Transportation Dispatcher, you will evaluate and prioritize requests in a consistent manner and allocate resources to meet the needs of the patients and the medical facilities, as well as:
- Receive and process incoming emergency and non-emergency telephone requests for service;
- Confirm incoming information from callers and input data into a computer;
- Provide pre-arrival instruction over the telephone;
- Deploy available ambulance resources to maintain maximum response performance;
- Direct ambulances to appropriate hospital destinations;
- Efficiently operate console equipment including multi-line telephone, radio and computer-aided dispatch equipment;
- Follow established standard operating protocols and procedures; and,
- Complete appropriate documentation as required.
These job duties are only the basic and prime duties of the classification. Related and allied duties may be assigned from time to time as may become necessary to the operation of Ambulance NB.
Required Qualifications:
- have a post-secondary education or equivalent work experience – in the health and medical field would be preferred;
- Written and spoken competence in English and spoken competence in French are required;
- submit a valid and clean criminal records check;
- have current First Aid and CPR Level C certification that has been issued in the last 12 months, or willing to obtain;
- demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and clearly under stressful conditions
- be physically and mentally able to work 12-hour rotating shifts – including days, nights, weekends and statutory holidays – wearing headphones at all times while on duty;
- have considerable work experience in receiving, managing and responding to inquiries and service requests from the public - experience in public safety emergency communications or a related medical field is considered an asset.
- obtain a passing grade on the personnel software testing, as well as, successfully completing the MCMC training program both call taking and dispatch;
- possess advanced knowledge of the geography of the New Brunswick area, including, but not limited to, major streets, highways, public transit, hospitals, primary medical facilities, therein.
- have accurate keyboarding skills of 4000 keystrokes per hour, as demonstrated by testing, and have the ability to perform constant fast data entry while carrying out multiple tasks;
- have the ability to quickly and independently make immediate and logical decisions and take appropriate action in a complex dynamic environment;
- have the ability to multi-task under constant pressure in a high stress environment;
- demonstrate effective interpersonal communications skills to deal with the public, allied agency personnel and co-workers;
- demonstrate ability and dexterity in handling call-taking and dispatching functions using computer-aided dispatch, multi-line telephone and radio communications systems;
- demonstrate the ability to transfer learned skills into practical, real-time application;
- good hearing and vision (including colour vision) suitable for call-taking and dispatching functions are required;
- be familiar with Windows computer environment.
Other Job Requirements: As part of the recruitment process you will have to participate in the Job Shadowing Program – you will spend a minimum of four (4) hours in the Centre to learn about the position by shadowing an experienced Dispatcher. The Job Shadowing Program is unpaid, but a requirement of the recruitment process.
As part of the recruitment process you will have to successfully complete the Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) Certification course, at your cost, with the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (http://www.prioritydispatch.net/index.php?a=training&c=advemd). Ambulance New Brunswick will coordinate the details of the EMD Certification. As an employee you will be required to maintain your Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification in accordance with standards set by the International Academy of Emergency Dispatching.
Completion of an approved paramedic training program and registration as a paramedic in the province of New Brunswick (or equivalent) would be considered an asset.
