Duties: This is a technical field position involved primarily in forest protection, compliance and related resource management. Conducts wildfire suppression operations and determines initial attack strategy on wildfire operations; acts as fire boss and crew boss as situations warrant; directs air and ground suppression activities and ensures sufficient resources are in place for fire suppression; operates and transports fire equipment to scene of fire; works in and around aircraft and operates emergency vehicles and radio communications equipment; collects data and calculates fire weather index; assists in conducting patrols and investigations of infractions to Departmental Regulations; carries out preliminary investigations on wildfire causes; inspects harvesting operations and Crown Land Leases for compliance to fire legislation; posts signs and notices; performs various duties related to prescribed burn operations, silviculture projects, habitat improvement, access roads, inventory, scaling, utilization surveys, insect and disease control surveys and spraying, and other resource management duties; issues Departmental permits; maintains Departmental property and equipment. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications: Knowledge of forest fire behaviour, fire suppression techniques and terminology, operations, use and maintenance of various equipment, forest fire legislation, fire weather index and the use of radio telephones. Candidates must be safety conscious and possess initiative, supervisory, analytical, organizational, interpersonal and good oral and written communication skills. The above qualifications would normally have been acquired and demonstrated through completion of a two year technical program in a natural resource discipline supplemented by experience in forest fire fighting and activities related to resource and protection programs.  The successful candidate must be able to report to his/her assigned Forest Fire Depot within one half hour of notification of after-duty fire call, possess a valid Newfoundland and Labrador Class 05 Driver's License, and be able to work away from his/her headquarters area for extended periods. Successful candidate will be required to provide a driver's abstract from Motor Registration Division. Offers of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a medical assessment and a physical ability test arranged by the Department. These medical and physical standards have been adopted by the Department from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre's national standard for fire fighters.

Salary:               $31,722.60  -  $35,089.60   (GS-26)
