The Provincial Emergency Duty Services located in the Dartmouth District Office is currently requesting applications for a permanent full time Social Worker position. In the event that a vacancy, or vacancies, arise in the same position classification title in Central Region within a three month period of the closing date of this competition, then this competition may be used to fill that vacancy or vacancies. 

Note - Hours of Work:  Rotating Shifts Including Days, Evenings and Weekends.

This is a bargaining unit position restricted to current civil service employees represented by Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. External applicants will be considered if there are no qualified bargaining unit applicants.

Duties:

The Social Worker provides a wide variety of professional child welfare services which may include protection services for children; development, coordination, and implementation of foster care and adoption services; and planning and supervision of children in permanent care and custody. Ensuring the safety and well-being of children from abuse or neglect; provides ongoing services to parents and children, and assesses families for placement of children.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Social Worker Degree and eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers or an RSW (N.S.) who is currently classified and practising as a Social Worker II in the field of Child Welfare and Agent of the Minister. Preference will be given to candidates with 2 or more years related experience. Experience in Child Welfare investigations and knowledge of the Children and Family Services Act is essential. Training and current working experience in Physical and Sexual Abuse Investigations is required. The successful candidate will possess a good knowledge of child development, family functioning, child abuse and neglect as well as effective intervention strategies with individuals and families. In addition, a solid knowledge of child welfare placement services including foster and residential services would be an asset. Sound judgement, effective communication and interpersonal skills are required. Candidates must be able to travel in responding to various work site locations.

Classification Range: PR 8 - 14
 
Salary Range: $42,094 - $65,244
