What They Do

Marine Systems Engineers are responsible for the readiness, operation and maintenance of all naval suite systems. They analyze the state of systems, equipment and personnel, predict their requirement for Naval operations, and advise Command accordingly. Marine Systems Engineering Officers are members of the Navy. They provide engineering expertise in support of day-to-day naval operations, maintain marine systems on ships and submarines, ensure the fleet's ongoing renewal through modernization and replacement and, in peacetime, sustain the infrastructure needed to support naval operations and missions in times of emergency, mobilization or war.

Qualification Requirements

You must meet Canadian Forces medical standards and successfully complete a selection process that includes interviews and a wide range of exams. The primary degrees for those who wish to become Marine Systems Engineers are a Bachelor of Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. Most other Engineering degrees and many Science degrees are also acceptable.

Training

The length and nature of your officer training depends on your enrolment program. Initial Assessment and Basic Officer Training are conducted at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec. Basic Officer Training is the 4-week Naval Environment Training Program – Officers course held at the Naval Officer Training Centre in Victoria, B.C. This course introduces the naval environment and includes four weeks on a minor war vessel for officers to experience life at sea. Several courses are then given at the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School (CFNES) in Halifax, N.S. The first course, Naval Engineering Indoctrination, lasts 11 weeks and includes 7 weeks on a major warship. The next course, Marine Systems Engineering Applications, lasts 22 weeks.

Upon completion of this course, officers join Fleet ships for one year in order to consolidate their skills and knowledge of Marine Systems Engineering.

Working Environment

Marine Systems Engineers are employed in fleet ships and submarines and at shore-based establishments that support the fleet. They are frequently required to work long hours and are on call around the clock.

In shore-based establishments, they may be stationed anywhere in Canada (primarily in Halifax, N.S., Victoria, B.C. and the Nation's Capital Region) or abroad.

Opportunities For Advancement

Opportunities for advanced and specialty training are available as your career progresses. For those who demonstrate the required ability and potential, there are countless opportunities for advancement, promotion and advanced training.
