Production Superintendent
Location: Port Hawkesbury

Newpage Corporation is the largest printing papers company in North America. Of its 11 mills, its Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia mill houses some of the highest levels of papermaking technologies in the world.

Today we are searching for a PM2 Superintendent to join this state of the art facility.

Reporting to the PM2 Production Manager, he/she will direct and coordinate Production Line stock preparation, paper machine and finishing operations, carry out responsibilities in a manner which will ensure maximum production of paper meeting all quality requirements, directly supervise seven salaried staff and indirectly supervise the pool of operators for the PM2 Line.  In addition, the successful candidate will network with suppliers, consultants and professionals at other mills within and external to the company. 

Specific responsibilities:

  • Develop goals and implementation strategies for productivity, quality, efficiency, cost-control and safety improvements for a super calendar paper production line.
  • Monitor operations daily to ensure production goals are met including checking visual and physical characteristics of paper being produced and condition of paper machine operations, preventing or resolving problems and advising supervisors on required corrective actions.
  • Produce and certify a product of the highest acceptable quality meeting all optical, visual, and testing standards while minimizing energy consumption and environmental losses.
  • Follow up on complaints and quality concerns and direct corrective action.
  • Supervision of the line supervisors, production engineers, and maintenance team leaders.
  • Ensure optimum equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain communication and coordination with the TMP team.
  • Promote programs which will ensure the safety and health of all personnel.
  • Control department costs with established standards.
  • Participate in customer visits and quality follow-up.
  • Maintain harmonious relations with employees.

Position Requirements:

  • At least 10 years paper machine experience with five years in a supervisory role.
  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or Paper Science.
  • Have the ability to work with all levels of the organization.
  • Possess effective communication skills.
  • Make decisions in emergency situations.
  • Have the ability to develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, company mills, and other paper mills.
  • Have advanced problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Work beyond normal work schedule as necessary to fulfill the position responsibilities.
