Reports to: Mapping Section Leader 

Purpose:  

The Alberta Geological Survey, part of Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board, requires an individual to provide a major contribution to the mapping and stratigraphic understanding of Alberta's Quaternary sediments within a team working to create a new three-dimensional Geological Atlas of Alberta.

Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Apply advanced geological principals and independent judgement to the mapping of Alberta's surficial geology based on field observations and the interpretation of aerial photographs and digital images.
  • Stratigraphic mapping of Quaternary sediments and the bedrock unconformity utilizing field observations and well data.
  • Conduct sediment sampling for laboratory analyses (including heavy mineral and geochemical determinations), monitor analytical processing and report on results.
  • Make significant contributions to the understanding of Alberta's geology and disseminate this information and knowledge in geological reports, presentations and peer-reviewed journals in a manner that will maintain and enhance the scientific credibility of the Alberta Geological Survey and the Energy Resources Conservation Board.
  • Make significant contributions to the digital Geological Atlas of Alberta project.
  • Design and lead complex, high priority projects to advance the understanding of Alberta's geology involving collaboration with scientists having a variety of specialties and affiliations.
  • Manage projects, including budget responsibilities, and supervise and mentor personnel.
  • Provide sound geological advice, guidance and specialist expertise to staff within various areas of the Energy Resources Conservation Board, particularly to those within the Resources Branch.
  • Interact with peers in universities, provincial and federal government departments, and industry.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree in Geology or related discipline (Ph.D. preferred) with a minimum of eight years of related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of sedimentary processes in glacial and non-glacial environments.
  • Experience producing surficial geology maps and constructing Quaternary stratigraphic models.
  • Comprehensive professional understanding of the principals of stratigraphy.
  • Demonstrated analytical, research and presentation skills combined with the ability to apply original thinking to resolve complex issues.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (demonstrated by publication record).
  • Ability and willingness to undertake field mapping projects in remote and rugged areas of Alberta requiring travel by helicopter and all-terrain vehicles.
  • Experience logging core and interpreting downhole geophysical logs an asset.
  • Experience applying geological knowledge to issues related to groundwater, aggregate resources and drift prospecting advantageous.
    • Ability to contribute (as needed) to the stratigraphic mapping of clastic bedrock units an asset.
  • Ability to visualize and create three-dimensional geological models.
  • Working knowledge of common PC office software (knowledge of GIS, subsurface modeling and database software advantageous).
  • Ability to work in teams and provide leadership.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Valid driver's licence.
  • Eligibility for registration with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.
