Nova Scotia Community College is at a pivotal time in our history. NSCC is on a path to 2011 to redevelop learning spaces, and launched a new Strategic Plan in 2006. Our Opportunity:  Creating and maintaining a climate of student success for Aboriginal learners is an essential component of the College's ongoing commitment to working with First Nations communities.  The Aboriginal Student Success Advisor will play a vital role within the Centre for Student Success Team at Marconi Campus. In this role, you will act as liaison with Aboriginal learners and the First Nations community, as well as provide student success services that are culturally relevant and that recognize the rich cultural background and unique learning needs of Aboriginal students. You will collect and analyze data on the supports offered and provide a report on the impact of these supports, including recommendations on the development and delivery of future effective practices. This position reports to the Campus Team Leader.

Your Credentials: 

  • You possess a relevant Community College Advanced diploma or undergraduate degree, in the field of social work, education, or community services, combined with a minimum of three years' occupational experience, or the recognized equivalencies.  At least two years of your occupational experience has been working with Aboriginals in an education or community development setting.
  • Familiarity with a variety of computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access is essential.
  • You are a dynamic, innovative and proven organizer with skills as an adult educator and are familiar with the student success and career issues of the First Nations community.
  • You should have strong research skills (data collection and analysis) and have experience working with confidential records according to standard counselling practices.
