Bedrock Mapping Geologist

Pay Band 5

The Department of Natural Resources, Geological Surveys Branch, is seeking a Geologist to investigate the stratigraphy, structure and geological evolution of northern New Brunswick. Based in Bathurst, the Geologist will conduct field surveys, and produce detailed maps and reports on the bedrock geology and mineral potential of selected areas in the northern part of the Province. The geoscientific information collected during the field surveys will serve to promote mineral exploration and mine development in New Brunswick.  This position will involve traveling to remote areas, carrying out field work which will include walking on uneven terrain, and carrying equipment and tools in all weather conditions.

Specific duties will include planning and budgeting for field projects, collecting and interpreting new field and laboratory data; interpreting existing data (geological, geochemical and geophysical) to assist in the construction of geological maps; preparing maps, papers and reports for publication in provincial reports and external scientific journals; delivering oral and poster presentations at industry forums; helping maintain existing geoscience databases and developing others as needed; and advising both public and private sector clients.

Qualifications: 

A Masters of Science in Geology with a minimum of three years related field experience or a Bachelors of Science in Geology with at minimum of five years of related field experience. Candidates will be proficient using a polarizing microscope; have knowledge of GPS and GIS systems; and lithogeochemistry and its applications.  He or she must also demonstrate the following competencies: analytical thinking and effective interactive communication. Knowledge of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required. 

Written and spoken competence in English is required.

In order to be appointed to this position, candidates must: provide proof of education; possess a valid driver's licence; be a Canadian citizen or provide proof of permanent resident status or landed immigrant status.

Note: In the event that this competition poses difficulties in recruiting a qualified candidate, a covering off appointment at a lower level may be made. In that case, candidates with less than the required years of experience may also be considered.

Salary: $1930 to $2695 bi-weekly
