Position Scope:
Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the Nursing Unit or designate, the Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for all facets of nursing care as defined in the Unit and within the scope of the RN nursing practice. The RN works in a collaborative relationship and coordinator role with other health care colleagues, maintaining professional autonomy as supported by the Standards of Practice defined by the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia. Using a holistic care-giving and care-receiving approach, the RN respects the human dignity and choice of care of the patient/resident and utilized all his/her skills in the provision of the assessed nursing needs of the patient/resident. The RN exhibits sound professional judgment and initiative while working within the established philosophy and objectives, practice standards, guidelines, legislations, policies and procedures, Mission and Vision of the South Shore District Health Authority (SSDHA).
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an approved School of Nursing.
- Current registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia.
- One to two years' recent obstetrical nursing experience essential.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Certified or willing to become certified in NRP, Stable, ALSO and ACORN.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact positively with patients/residents, families, other health care providers and staff, demonstrating sensitivity, empathy and warmth.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and supervise patient/resident care.
- Ability to demonstrate sound decision-making skills in crises situations and be accountable for decisions.
- Ability to plan and organize a busy obstetrical inpatient unit and ambulatory obstetrics.
- Basic computer skills – Microsoft Suite – E-mail, Internet, Meditech.
- Physical and mental capabilities to perform the duties of the position such as lifting and mobilizing patients; varying workloads and shift work; exposure to drugs and radiation, soiled and contaminated equipment, supplies and instruments and medical conditions of patients/residents; exposure in specified units to pets such as resident cats and pet therapy dogs; dealing with stressful situations relating to agitated, confused, aggressive or hostile behaviour of patients/residents.
- Regular attendance in current and previous employment.
