Position Scope:
Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the Nursing Unit or designate, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides the assessed nursing needs to the patients/residents of the Unit and works within the Code of Ethics and Standards of Nursing Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia. Using a holistic care-giving and care-receiving approach, the LPN respects the human dignity and choice of care of the patient/resident. The LPN exhibits sound professional judgment and initiative while working within the established philosophy, objectives, guidelines, legislations, policies and procedures, Mission and Vision of the South Shore District Health Authority (SSDHA).
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an approved School of Practical Nurses.
- Current registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Nova Scotia.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Current certification for administering medications required.
- Evidence of recent education/courses relevant to the specified unit.
- One to two years’ recent nursing experience in the specified unit, preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to interact positively with patients/residents, families, other health care providers and staff with a pleasant and cooperative attitude, demonstrating sensitivity, empathy and warmth.
- Ability to adapt and understand patients/residents needs, assisting them in meeting their fullest physical and emotional potential.
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and sound decision-making skills in crises situations.
- Basic computer skills – Microsoft Suite – E-mail – Internet – Meditech.
- Physical and mental capabilities to perform the duties of the position such as lifting and mobilizing patients; varying workloads and shift work; exposure to drugs and radiation, soiled and contaminated equipment, supplies and instruments and medical conditions of patients/residents; exposure in specified units to pets such as resident cats and pet therapy dogs; dealing with stressful situations relating to agitated, confused, aggressive or hostile behaviour of patients/residents.
- Demonstrated good attendance in current and previous employment.
