2011 Canada Winter Games Host Society

In less than two years, thousands of our country's best and brightest will set their sights on Nova Scotia as we host the 2011 Canada Winter Games. More than 2,700 athletes from across Canada, 400 media, 700 VIPs, 500 officials and thousands of visitors will head east for the two-week event. Featuring 20 sports and numerous cultural events and festivals, the Games will be the largest event in Halifax's history, and our first time hosting the Canada Winter Games.

Duties:
 
Reporting to the Language Services Coordinator, the Translator (one of two translators) is responsible for converting written material in Canada's official languages to the inverse (mostly English to French), ensuring that the translated version is as accurate as the source language text. The successful candidate will liaise with staff and volunteers to communicate information in a timely and consistent fashion. Specific accountabilities include:

  • Read original material and rewrite it in target language, ensuring the meaning of the source text is retained
  • Liaise with clients to discuss any unclear points regarding original material
  • Proofread and edit final translated versions before they are published/communicated
  • Provide clients with a grammatical, well-expressed final version of the translated text
  • Use specialist dictionaries, thesauruses and reference books to find the closest equivalents for terminology and words used
  • Enhance Games lexicon on an ongoing basis

Qualifications:

Our successful candidate has a degree in Translation, is fully bilingual in French and English and offers a minimum of two years experience in translation; CTIC membership through ATINS or another provincial organization is preferred. An acceptable equivalent of education and related experience will be considered. Our successful candidate is client-focused, organized, results oriented, pays close attention to detail and has excellent communication skills (oral and written). Proficiency with common office software, such as Microsoft Office, and email programs such as GroupWise or MS Outlook, is required. Experience in a not-for-profit, Games, or sport environment is considered an asset for this position.

The successful candidate may be required to work varied hours as needed to support the planning and delivery of the Games.

Compensation for this position includes a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package.  This is a term opportunity, with an anticipated start date of January 2010 and end date in the winter of 2011.
