Armoured Soldier
Canadian Forces / Forces canadiennes
Location: Flexible

Overview

You will drive, operate and maintain an armoured fighting vehicle (AFV), its weapons systems and its communications systems. You will be trained to fight as a member of the Combat Arms team.

Main Benefits

  • Professional training provided for eleven weeks
  • Opportunities for advancement

What They Do

Armoured Soldiers are trained as members of the Combat Arms team, which also includes the Infantry, the Artillery and the Combat Engineers.  Each Armoured Soldier belongs to one of the Armoured regiments of the Canadian Army, and serves as a part of the crew of an AFV. They also gather and relay information about the enemy and the terrain.

Qualification Requirements

As well as courage and both physical and mental stamina, Armoured Soldiers must possess good learning abilities, particularly an ability to pay close attention to detail, and a willingness to acquire specialized technical skills and knowledge.

Training

The first stage of training for all new recruits is the Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.
On completion of BMQ, Armoured Soldiers attend the Combat Training Centre in Gagetown, New Brunswick. Training takes eleven weeks and teaches the following basic skills:

  • Army physical fitness
  • Mounted and dismounted reconnaissance patrolling
  • Advanced weapons-handling
  • Individual field-craft
  • Driving and maintaining tanks and reconnaissance vehicles
  • Firing and maintaining weapon systems currently used in Canadian AFVs
  • Operating surveillance equipment on the reconnaissance vehicle
  • Identifying Canadian and foreign military vehicles, aircraft and equipment
  • Using tactical command-and-control communications equipment
  • Organization, roles, doctrine and tactics of armour and reconnaissance
  • History and traditions of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps

Working Environment

Armoured Soldiers in training and deployed on operations work long hours, both by day and by night, and can expect to work outdoors, where they may be exposed to all kinds of weather. Often the conditions are physically demanding and may include frequent exposure to loud noise, dust and combustion fumes. Inside the AFV, Armoured Soldiers perform their duties in small crew compartments.

Opportunities For Advancement

Qualified Armoured Soldiers enjoy excellent opportunities for advanced training and promotion. Employment opportunities for Armoured Soldiers exist across Canada and on deployed operations around the world.
