Equity Officer

Our client is the governing body for the legal profession in Nova Scotia. They are searching for a complement to their team to provide strategic advice and direction in all aspects of equity in the legal profession. In this role, you will advocate on behalf of historically disadvantaged communities, and organize, prepare and deliver educational materials and programs in this area.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring there is a current Equity Plan to address equity issues and initiatives, by providing leadership and strategic direction to the Executive Director and Council.
  • Providing support to and work with the Race Relation and Gender Equality Committees in accordance with their mandates.
  • Collecting and analyzing data relating to entry and retention of lawyers in designated groups and provide strategic advice on these issues.
  • Administering the Employment Equity Guidelines for Crown Law Agents and other law firms.
  • Initiating and maintaining contact with law students and coordinating the Mentorship Program linking African Canadian and Aboriginal law students and members as well as a mentorship program for women lawyers.
  • Conducting community outreach.
  • Making presentations in communities across Nova Scotia.
  • Providing leadership and support to equity related ad hoc projects
  • Acting as a resource and consultant to all other departments on issues of equity.

The Equity Officer is a unique position requiring judgment and an ability to act as an internal consultant to the Society and its members. The position requires:

  • Law (or equivalent) degree. Knowledge of the legal profession and law firm structure, culture and operations would be an asset.
  • Strong understanding of social issues around equity and diversity as they relate to the legal profession and the Nova Scotia demographic framework.
  • Ability to develop training materials and facilitate training programs.
  • Ability to establish and manage multiple, competing priorities in consultation with stakeholders.
  • 5 yrs in equity field and an extensive network of related contacts/an ability to build that network.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
