Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Foreman, the Labourer assists the Foreman and Division Crewman in the maintenance of dyke, aboiteaux and flood control dams in Nappan, Cumberland County.  Additional responsibilities include operating and maintaining various types of tools (e.g. drills, skill saws, power saws, grinders); and mowing of dykes, including steep slopes, and at times harrowing and seeding dykes.  The Labourer will operate the scale house for the weighing of trucks and site dumping of trucks for rock work. In addition, the Labourer will carry out maintenance on aboiteau gates by replacing chain and bushings (depending on the type of gates being maintained).  The successful candidate will be subject to very adverse working conditions of mud and water at varying times of day as dictated by tides, including tides that may rise in some locations as much as one foot in five minutes.  This is an entry level position within the Land Protection team.

Qualifications:

Grade X and ability to operate a farm tractor.  Assets include the ability to carry out heavy timber construction; aboiteau construction and maintenance; and concrete construction and repair, including formwork.  The ability to operate, set-up and dismantle portable water pumps; set-up portable generators; and carry out minor repairs on all equipment and tools would be considered assets.  Additional assets include experience installing culverts, operating a scale house and carrying out maintenance on gates.  Safety training in WHMIS, First Aid, Excavation and Fall Protection would be considered assets as well.

Bi-weekly Rate of Pay: $1,196 to $1,219
