Laboratory Technologist, Regular Full Time

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Charge Technologist, the incumbent performs routine laboratory BGS and/or TD and/or NAT testing. The technologist is required to follow relevant SOPs and COPs, maintain a clean and safe work environment and perform other laboratory duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receives, inspects, stores, prepares, and tests reagents, controls, and reagent kits.
  • Performs test procedures and records results.
  • Ensures all required documentation is accurate and complete.
  • Responsible for the preparation, maintenance and verification of testing equipment.
  • Reviews testing documents.
  • Performs routine BGS and/or TD and/or NAT testing related quality control/assurance activities.
  • Prepares all donor testing related non-conformance reports.
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.
  • Maintains technical competency and promotes continuous learning.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications: 

  • A minimum of six (6) months previous laboratory experience in a related discipline preferred
  • Diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Technology  
  • Certified general registered technologist with Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science and licensed practising member of Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists
  • Experience with Transfusion Medicine / Red Cell Serology an asset
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Superior multi-tasking skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Detail-oriented and capable of working in a highly regulated environment
  • Superior problem solving and decision making skills
  • Ability to operate related equipment  including excellent MS Office skills
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job
