Reports to the District Laboratory Manager and functions as a key member of the laboratory management team. The incumbent participates in the planning, development, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the South West Health Laboratory Services. As part of the Laboratory management team, this position works collaboratively with the management staff of the district, as well as with pathologist, Medical Staff, Laboratory staff and consumers in managing and ensuring the effective delivery of laboratory services at all assigned sites. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working with the District Laboratory Manager to:
- Plan, develop, implement, supervise and evaluate a comprehensive range of laboratory services within framework of the Laboratory services programme of South West Health
- Participate in budget preparation
- Facilitate the orientation, supervision, scheduling and professional development of staff
- In conjunction with the pathologist and staff, establishes the standards and indicators for measuring the quality of patient care through a Quality/Risk Management program
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned
Qualifications:
- Current registration with the CSMLS and licensed with NSCMLT
- Proven management experience with sound professional judgement, initiative, leadership, effective motivation skills and the ability to delegate
- Proficient computer skills and experience with client/server based systems and hardware
- Previous experience managing in a unionized environment
- Minimum 5 years continuous laboratory experience
- Strengths in problem solving, teamwork and supervisory skills
- Sound knowledge of the principles of accountability
- Must be adaptable and flexible to facilitate change and effectively handle the demands of a challenging position and workload as proven by past experience
- Superior communications and decision making skills
- Ability to promote good interdisciplinary relations with staff and all disciplines
- Keen sense of excellence in service delivery with a positive problem solving approach
Preferred:
- Advanced certification with the CSMLS
- Diploma in Hospital management
