Duties:

Reporting to the Deputy Minister, the Executive Director, Renewable Resources Branch, is accountable for strategies, legislation, regulations, policies, programs and information systems related to the sustainable development and management of the province’s Forests, Wildlife and Parks resources.  The Executive Director ensures that the Renewable Resources Branch is effectively contributing to departmental and government priorities by providing leadership and direction in monitoring and assessing the evolving needs and expectations of government, industry and the public for resource information, and by leading the design and implementation of legislation, regulations, policies and programs that address these needs.  The Executive Director contributes to the effective functioning of the Department’s Executive Management team by providing information and specialized knowledge on matters related to renewable resources and represents the province in national and international government forums.  Important aspects of this position include effective management of human and financial resources of the Renewable Resources Branch, sustainable use of Forests, Wildlife and Parks resources and their contribution to provincial and regional economic development, and effective communication with stakeholders.  He/she has frequent contact with provincial government senior officials, industry associations and leaders, technical specialists on technical and policy matters related to renewable resource development and management, and government officials in federal and other provincial/territorial governments.

Qualifications:
 
The successful candidate will have a university degree in a related science and extensive experience in industry or a government organization responsible for regulation and/or administration.  A post-graduate degree in a relevant discipline will be considered an asset.  He/she will be expected to demonstrate leadership experience and highly-developed and progressive leadership skills and abilities with a record of achievement in positions of increasing responsibility.  Excellent management, organizational, communication, interpersonal, and planning skills are essential.  The Executive Director will have a record of creative thinking and applying specialized knowledge of renewable resource science in the context of government policies.  The successful candidate will be familiar with Canada’s and Nova Scotia’s renewable resource industries, the role of public policy and public service science and engineering programs in economic development, and current issues with respect to the development of management of renewable resources in Nova Scotia.

Classification Level:  MCP 31  

Salary Range:      $82,768. - $107,598.
