This is a bargaining unit position restricted to current civil service employees represented by Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. Duties:

Under the direction of the Program Administration Officer, the Auditor will conduct a variety of tax-auditing and verification activities of varying degrees of complexity.  S/he will be responsible to conduct office and/or field audits of vendors (manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers) and consumers to ensure compliance with the Revenue Act and Regulations in the areas of fuel, tobacco and sales tax, as well as under the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), International Registration Program (IRP), Corporate Capital Tax, Small Business Tax Deduction, Petroleum Product Pricing Act, Your Energy Rebate Program  and various consumer protection statutes relating to lenders and loan brokers, collection agencies, consumer reporting agencies, direct sellers and funeral homes and services. Audits consist of examining and verifying the financial accounting systems of vendors and consumers, on-site inspection of operations or reviewing and analyzing the monthly returns of manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and consumers to ensure compliance with legislation.  The Auditor may be required to appear in court as a witness.

Qualifications:

Completion of the 2nd Level (six courses) of a professional accounting program (CA, CGA, CMA) or an acceptable equivalent is required and three years related experience in the field of auditing or accounting.  Initiative and the ability to work with minimum supervision are required. Must have a demonstrated combination of skills and experience in accounting, audit, modern office technology, and computer assisted audit techniques.  S/he must have the ability to quickly grasp knowledge of the statute administered. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills are essential.  Must have the skills to deal effectively with the public in a multifaceted and stressful environment, occasionally in confrontational and sensitive situations. The successful candidate must demonstrate a high level of confidentiality, sound judgement, attention to detail and be able to work well under pressure and deadlines. The auditor must have a valid driver's licence, access to a reliable vehicle and able to travel in responding to various work site locations.

Note: Offer of employment is contingent on the successful candidate passing appropriate background checks.

Classification Range: TE 18-24

Salary Range: $37,638 - $56,356
