Instrumentation and Control Systems Engineer

Location: Miramichi

We are currently seeking applications from people interested in joining the engineering team for the design and construction of a new plant in Miramichi. This state-of-the-art processing plant will create polycrystalline silicon from quartz, which is used in the manufacturing of solar panels and computer chips. The design phase will begin immediately, with operation expected in 2012. It is intended that this position will transition to an operations function once the plant is fully commissioned.

Job Description:

Representing the owner, this individual will work with the engineering contractor and instrument and control systems vendor to ensure that systems are designed to meet the project objectives and are implemented in a timely and cost effective manner. The engineer should be able to design a distributed control system with instruments communicating via Foundation Fieldbus, and control of packaged equipment with PLC that must communicate with the DCS system. There will be a mix of continuous and batch controls as well as safety instrumented systems. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical oversight & coordination for design and implementation of instrument and control systems. 
  • Assist EPCM and instrument and control system vendors in development of overall  control system architecture and strategy to be employed.
  • Approve drawings and other design documents submitted by EPCM and vendors.
  • Work with EPCM and vendors to develop and implement testing and commissioning plans.
  • Assist in implementation and startup of instrumentation and controls.
  • Provide input into project schedule and drive EPCM and vendors to meet key schedule milestones.
  • Provide input into project cost estimates and budgets.
  • Work with EPCM and vendors to track and control costs within budget.
  • Manage changes to design as project progresses to minimize cost and schedule impacts. 
  • Participate in process hazards analyses and ensure that safety instrumented systems are designed to address identified hazards.
  • Provide project-specific training to site personnel.
  • Post project activities could include assignments in the engineering or maintenance department participating in design, and minor capital projects.

Qualifications:

  • Able to organize and effectively manage multiple activities simultaneously.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and be detail oriented.
  • Must be able to write reports, procedure manuals, and make effective presentations.
  • Able to travel as required for existing expansions and future expansion projects.  
  • Minimum 7 years experience in industrial controls and instrumentation applications.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university, and able to apply for certification with APEGNB.
