The Office of the Ombudsman/Child & Youth Advocate is looking for a candidate to fill the position of Clinical Director, Child and Youth Advocacy. The successful candidate would be located in either Fredericton or Dieppe.
The Office of the Ombudsman/Child & Youth Advocate, in accordance with the Child & Youth Advocate Act, ensures that children and youths’ rights and interests are protected in government policy, programs and services. This is done by conducting independent and confidential investigations into complaints regarding access to appropriate services; as well as monitoring laws and policies to make sure they are fair and properly followed; reporting on the availability, effectiveness, responsiveness and relevance of services in New Brunswick; and advocating for the rights and interests of children and youth in general.
Reporting directly to the New Brunswick Child and Youth Advocate, the primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be:
- Investigate requests for advocacy which includes dealing directly with complainants and contacting appropriate officials as required; conducting policy research; determining if there is an appropriate solution or action that can be taken to assist a child or youth; providing appropriate responses to complainants and recommendations to government when appropriate
- Be responsible for the assignment and closure of all requests for advocacy
- Coaching and directing staff that carry requests for advocacy
- Provide clinical supervision to assigned staff and to others who carry (C&YA) situations
- Evaluate staff competence and efficiency
- Assess and respond to staff training needs and development
- Indentify and develop immediate and long range needs and opportunities to advocate for the rights and interests of children and youth
- Identify potential systemic issues within the (C&YA) requests
- Liaise with community and governmental partners
- Assist with public events organized by the Office
- Lead some of the Office’s projects
- Work with the management team to triage potential systemic investigations
Required knowledge and skills:

Education and experience:
The successful candidate will possess a Masters in Social Work and will require a minimum of 6 years experience in child protection work. Experience in mental health, public safety or education will be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of training and direct related experience could be considered.
