Health and Safety Officer

The Health and Safety Officer provides functional leadership in the development, maintenance and coordination of the plant health and safety program. The position has ongoing responsibilities to assess plant safety performance and where appropriate develop and implement plans to improve safety performance.

Responsibilities:

• Maintains and develops plant safety policies and procedures to ensure they are in compliance with the appropriate Provincial legislation
• Establish and implement a total Health & Safety program
• Acts as the lead management representative on the Joint Health and Safety Committee, take minutes, and perform tasks and follow-ups from meetings
• Responsible to ensure communication of plant safety policies and procedures to employees, management personnel, contractors and visitors
• Develop Emergency Preparedness and Response Policies and act as the Emergency Action Plan Coordinator responsible to maintain and communicate plan components to employees, management personnel and local emergency responders
• Conduct root cause investigation of recordable injuries and other identified safety incidents in conjunction with department supervisors and monitor follow-up activities to ensure timely completion
• Responsible for all Workers' Compensation and Health & Safety Legislation issues in 5 provinces
• Accountable to identify and coordinate Safety related training (WHMIS, S.O.P.s  etc) and track to ensure training is updated as required
• WSIB Administration, material safety and maintain inventory of safety supplies
• Point of contact for legislative bodies (OSHA, WSIB, MOE etc.)
• Investigate and research new process and programs
• Keep up to date on Provincial and Federal regulations to ensure compliance and to maximize safety
• Responsible for Plant Security and the related Policies and systems

Qualifications:

• Must have post secondary education in H&S or equivalent experience
• Must have greater than 4 years experience in Health & Safety
• Able to manage multiple projects
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Must have First Aid/CPR certification
• Must be proficient in MS office, SAP experience a definite asset
