Individuals selected to be interviewed and deemed recommendable for the position of Computer Support Specialist will be placed on a roster of potential candidates for current and future Computer Support Specialist positions with the Office of the Chief Information Officer. Those who are selected to appear on that roster will have been formally screened and interviewed based on qualifications and experience.  As positions become available, candidates and opportunities will then be matched and offers/appointments undertaken based on mutual agreement.

Duties:  These positions will be based out of St. John’s with the majority of work being performed in St. John’s and surrounding area.  However, work assignments may be given for any location supported by the OCIO.  Candidates may be assigned to field technical services or helpdesk on a long-term basis.  The successful candidates will be responsible for support of both hardware and software components.  Candidates must be sufficiently familiar with hardware, operating systems, and applications for installation and upgrade, and to recommend preferred courses of action.  Specifically, must know features and characteristics of memory, processors, peripheral devices (printers, monitors, keyboards/mice), video and network adapters, Windows 98/2000/XP operating systems, Microsoft Office productivity software, remote control technologies, and the client interfaces for networks, email, and Internet communication.  Knowledge of network communications and links to remote systems is essential.  Must possess diagnostic skills, and must be capable of clear communication with management and with clients in order to gain accurate understanding of the client problems, and to advise same of action taken or recommended. 

Qualifications:  Experience is necessary in Windows XP operating systems, microcomputer hardware and software installation, maintenance, and repair in a local area network environment. Candidates should be capable of working under minimum supervision, and must possess initiative to respond to requests for assistance when working independently.  CSS’s will be responsible for responding to day-to-day requests for support (helpdesk and/or field services) within a limited time.  Work conditions also require CSS to function as a team member in the sharing of task requirements and the sharing of possible solution information.  Must be capable of assessing priorities of specific tasks when given priority guidelines, and to be prepared to seek advice or assistance from colleagues or management when necessary.  Graduation from a provincially recognized post secondary institute or college with a certificate or diploma following a 2-year program in Computer Support, Computer Studies, or equivalent area of training; an equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.  Use of a personal vehicle and a RNC Certificate of Conduct are conditions of employment.

Salary:              $41,059.20 - $45,718.40 (GS 34)
