Upper St. John River Valley - New Brunswick

This is a unique opportunity for several family physicians. This picturesque area of west-central New Brunswick is situated along the St. John River valley, covering the 100 kilometres from Nackawic and Woodstock in the south, to Perth-Andover and Plaster Rock in the north. Woodstock is 100 kilometres northwest of Fredericton. There are 45,000 patients presently served by four small hospitals and 30 family physicians. Available specialty services include general surgery, internal medicine, and ophthalmology.

Major changes are underway. A new, state-of-the-art, 70-bed hospital is under construction near Hartland, with a completion date of July 2007. Two of the existing hospitals will be closed, while a primary care facility (inpatients, 24-hour ER) will be maintained in Perth-Andover and a community health centre will be developed in Plaster Rock. In addition to mostly primary care beds, the new hospital will include a 24-hour ER, primary care obstetrics with surgical back-up, intensive care, general surgery, internal medicine, and ophthalmology. Patients are referred to Fredericton and Saint John when other secondary or tertiary specialty care is required.

We require new family physicians for these communities and the new hospital. There is an immediate need for family physicians wishing to start a new practice in these communities and over the next five years, we will need family physicians to replace retiring practitioners.

In addition, we need full-time primary care hospitalists to provide inpatient care and full-time emergency room physicians for the new hospital opening July 2007.

The family doctors now practicing in the area are busy full-service physicians, reimbursed by a competitive fee-for-service schedule. We are recruiting office-based family physicians willing to participate in the provision of a full spectrum of primary care services, including ER, inpatient care, OR assists, and obstetrics, but participation in all three aspects of primary care is not expected. New family physicians working in the area served by the new hospital will participate on at least one of the hospital based primary care rosters.

We recognize that we must make our practice opportunities uniquely attractive in order to capture your interest. We recognize our need to be flexible. We are open to discuss your needs and interests, incentive packages, alternative reimbursement mechanisms, part-time work, arrangements for physician couples, and collaborative care possibilities. Please contact us if you think that your aspirations for personal life, family life, and practice style might fit our wide-ranging needs.
