Temporary, Full-time (to June 2009 with the possibility of extension)

General Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Division Manager of the Ambulatory and Outreach Services of the Children's and Women's Health Program, the incumbent will provide assessment and treat anomalies of ocular motilities, in particular strabismus and amblyopia conditions under the direction of an Ophthalmologist. The incumbent will administer appropriate ophthalmic/orthoptic tests including visual acuity, ocular motility and binocular vision assessments and complete such reports in a timely manner. He/she will also provide visual screening procedures in ophthalmology clinics, including out-reach clinic services outside of St. John's. The Orthoptist will discuss issues relating to patient care, surgeries and ophthalmology follow-ups with referring ophthalmologists, in addition to instructing medical students or interns on the techniques of Orthoptic assessments.

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science Degree with graduation from a recognized orthoptic training program. A minimum of 3-5 years orthoptic experience in an ophthalmic setting. Current certification by the Canadian or American Orthoptic Council is essential. Excellent communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving and team work abilities are essential. Must be committed to continuous learning and family centered care.

A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required.

Salary: Salary in accordance with the Association of Allied Health Professionals Collective Agreement, HP-37 ($50,395.69 - $64,298.81 per annum)

Hours of Work: 75 hours bi-weekly
