Assistant Maintenance Manager

Our client has an immediate opening for an Assistant Maintenance Manager to join its management team to help enhance their focus on customer service, workplace health & safety, and improving overall company profitability.  This position is located in Wabush, Labrador.

Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the ideal candidate will assume primary responsibilities in the areas of general heavy equipment maintenance and staffing of the maintenance operations including the recently improved and expanded maintenance facilities. In assisting the maintenance manager you will be responsible for a fleet of approximately 250 pieces of heavy equipment including larger shovels, loaders, dozers and haulage trucks, a fleet that is second to none in the province or in the region.

The ideal candidate will take ownership of all maintenance related issues, strive to find win-win solutions in any conflict situations and provide leadership in the accomplishment of your tasks which will include but not be limited to;

  • Managing, with the Maintenance Manager, the entire maintenance operations.
  • Take a leadership role in promoting and implementing the company's safety plan, procedures and culture in the workplace.
  • Assisting with scheduling resources to ensure an optimal level of service is provided to our customers while managing the rotational leave requirements of the maintenance employees, both staff and craft.
  • Preparing annual budgets for the efficient and ongoing maintenance of the entire equipment fleet, including assisting in recommendations for additions and/or deletions from the equipment fleet.
  • Interacting with the Operations/Production department on a daily basis to ensure equipment resources are allocated as required, on a priority basis, to meet anticipated needs for the immediate and projected future.
  • Partnering with management to communicate and implement all company policies and programs within the department.
  • Recommending employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer – employee relationship and promote a high level of employee morale and motivation.
  • Coordinating with the Training department the identification of employee training needs and the delivery of relevant programs.
  • Working closely with the Maintenance Manager, review current systems and provide recommendations to  improve overall operational efficiency while considering , buy or repair analysis, cost control, improving  availability, efficient utilization of the fleet, etc.
  • Working closely with the management group set target annual utilization and monitor against target on a regular basis to provide ongoing recommendations considering overall costs.
  • Monitor availability of equipment, measure against target, and provide recommendations when deviations occur.
  • Track all repair components  such as tire wear on all vehicles, ground engaging tools(GET), undercarriage, etc,  against established  targets, provide recommendations and implement  changes as needed to improve wear and reduce costs.
  • Monitor the preventative maintenance system (P.M's), recommend and implement changes where improvements are required in an effort to lower overall cost.
  • Monitor and interpret available information from VIMS, Conditioning Monitoring Systems, and other onboard systems in an effort to maximize efficiency and overall performance.
  • Monitor information provided by Payload Monitoring systems to ensure equipment operates within design criteria.

As the ideal candidate you will possess a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering with at least five years of progressive experience in a Heavy Equipment Maintenance environment. You will have a sound knowledge of MS Office and exceptional written and verbal communication skills. The ability to multitask and prioritize, along with being detail oriented and accurate, having a strong work ethic, strong organizational skills and personal initiative are mandatory. The ability to communicate in both English and French is considered essential.
