Naval Weapons Technician

You will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of all shipboard armament equipment and systems as well as the care and custody of all onboard ammunition and explosives.

What They Do

The Naval Weapons Technician (NW TECH) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all shipboard armament equipment and systems, as well as the care and custody of all onboard ammunition and explosives. They prepare, use and store all onboard ammunition and explosives, as well as operate, control and maintain combat systems. NW TECHs build and carry out preventative and corrective maintenance on certain weapon systems and frequently test and repair electrical and electronic components.

Qualification Requirements

Must be a team player, have good hearing, be physically strong and be able to adapt quickly to changing situations. The ability to apply logic and be resourceful are definite assets. A strong educational background with an interest in math and physics is preferred.

Training

The first stage of training for all new recruits is the four-month Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

On completion of the BMQ, NW TECHs attend Naval Environmental Training (NETP) at the Canadian Forces Fleet School (CFFS) in Esquimalt, British Columbia or Halifax, Nova Scotia for approximately five weeks. Training includes Naval history and organization, shipboard firefighting and damage control, watchkeeping duties and seamanship.

The second stage takes place at the Canadian Forces Naval Engineering School (CFNES) or Canadian Forces Fleet School (CFFS) in Halifax and last approximately two years. Training covers math, physics, fluid mechanics, electricity, electronics, machine shop skills, ammunition, hazardous material cleanup, common equipment and specific classes of ship equipment.

Employment

Upon successful completion of training, NW TECHs are posted on a Ship or a Naval Base. Initially, they spend the majority of their time at sea in Frigates, Destroyers and, if desired, Submarines based in Nova Scotia or British Columbia.

Working Environment

NW TECHs work above and below deck, under all weather conditions on ships in Halifax, N.S., or Esquimalt, B.C. Appropriate training, environmental clothing and equipment are provided. Support for the health, safety and morale of personnel is emphasized and readily available.
