Under the guidance of the Chief Technology Officer, the Engineering Manager oversees all aspects of the hardware design, prototype, testing and the continued engineering needs of Techlink’s hardware products. Besides hands-on engineering duties and management, this position also provides a vital link between the executive level and the ongoing engineering activities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Creation of hardware requirement specifications based on customer and internal requests
- Project management and delegation of duties to engineers and technicians within the department
- Creation and management of engineering documentation, schematics and drawings
- Evaluation of 3rd-party hardware to be integrated into Techlink’s products
- Design and production of prototype hardware devices for demonstration and pre-production
- Creation of bills of materials, part numbers, drawings and schematics to be used by manufacturing
- Design of custom electronic and mechanical systems for Techlink’s products, such as PCBs, harnesses, brackets and enclosures
- Co-ordination of the sub-contract of electronic and mechanical assemblies
- Co-ordination with testing labs for hardware testing such as safety, EMC and customer compliance
- Creation of test procedures and test equipment for internal and QA use
- Provide engineering support in overlapping areas such as protocols, communications, networking, operating systems and central systems
- Research and investigate new technologies to be incorporated into future products and operations
- Provide strategic input at an executive level to define future technologies and products
- Maintain a laboratory environment with appropriate test equipment, tools and processes
Qualifications:
- Design of embedded, micro-controller and operating systems
- Broad knowledge of commercial electronic system design
- Schematic capture, PCB layout (PADS), VLSI, FGPA and digital design
- Experience with lab equipment (DMM, scope, power supply, frequency generator, etc.)
- Demonstrate a passionate creative ability while maintaining a strong engineering discipline
- Working knowledge of product life-cycles, EMI/RFI issues and design for manufacturability
- Experience with network communications, cabling and wireless technologies
- Trained in creation of technical documentation
- Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Strong written, oral, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Advanced computer use, administration and troubleshooting skills
- Progressive management and supervisory skills
- Maintain current knowledge of appropriate industry trends and technologies
- Familiar with fabrication techniques and machine shop equipment
- Programming in Assembly, C, Perl and VHDL languages
Education and Experience:
- Degree in Computer or Electrical Engineering
- 5+ years of relevant industry experience
- Eligible to be registered as an EIT or Professional Engineer in the province of Nova Scotia
- Management skills are an asset
