Environmental, Health & Safety Manager
(Full Time Position)
The Long Lake Project is a unique joint venture of two companies with a shared vision for oil sands development - OPTI Canada Inc. and Nexen. Each company brings a distinct skill set, background experience and perspective to the project. Together we make an innovative and exciting team, collaborating on a truly new type of oil sands development.
The Long Lake project is located approximately 40 km southeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The lease is estimated to hold approximately six billion barrels of bitumen. OPTI and Nexen have a 50/50 joint ownership of the lease and plan to produce 70,000 bbl/d of bitumen using steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and upgrade it to approximately 60,000 bbl/d of high quality synthetic crude oil using the patented OrCrude (TM) process, combined with conventional hydrocracking and gasification technologies.
The Environment, Health & Safety Manager will report to the VP Operations. The position has nine direct reports.
Relocation to Fort McMurray is required for this position.

Responsibilities:
The Environment, Health & Safety Manager will provide leadership, technical expertise and coordination in the implementation and administration of the EHS management systems that enhance the business and support legislated and regulatory requirements. The position will oversee the operational aspects of the company's corporate EH&S program and will work closely with the Design, Construction and Operations departments throughout the detailed facility design phase, procurement, construction and operation of the Upgrader and subsequent phases.
Activities will include but are not limited to:
- Develop and implement Corporate and site (Upgrader) specific Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Emergency Preparedness and Response policies that are in accordance with all pertinent regulations and requirements under the appropriate Provincial regulations and Laws.
- Manage and coordinate Upgrader staff, Environment, Health and Safety training programs, including Emergency and Security Management.
- Oversee the implementation of these policies during the operation of the Upgrader and with any additional design, procurement and construction of subsequent upgraders.
- Work closely with the Joint Venture partner's Safety and Environmental groups to ensure the joint venture company policies are complementary.
- Liaise with the corporate Community and regulatory group to ensure environmental protocols are being met during the development of all EH&S programs.
- Take a lead in incident and accident prevention, investigation and analysis.
- Ensure audit compliance to work standards during operational activities and provide support to any subsequent developments.
- Ensure continuous improvement for all EH&S policies that are in place and under development.
Qualifications:
A university science degree and certification in one of the following disciplines: Environment, Health and/or Safety disciplines (Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation, Certified Industrial Hygienist –CIH or Certified Environmental Practitioner) is required with a minimum of 10 years related experience in a refinery, upgrader or chemical plant environment. 5-10 years experience in a management role is essential. Experience in the construction, commissioning and operational phases of a similar project would be an asset.
Experience with all provincial regulations is desirable (environmental, Occupational Health and safety codes and regulations)
Candidates with alternate combinations of education and experience may be considered.
