Electronic-Optronic Technician - Land
Canadian Forces / Forces canadiennes
Location: Flexible

Overview

You will be responsible for maintaining, repairing and modifying various types of equipment to keep it in top condition. You will belong to the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Branch of the Canadian Forces.

Main Benefits

  • Professional training provided for approximately 59 weeks
  • Opportunities for advancement

What They Do

Electronic-Optronic Technicians (Land) [EO TECH(L)] are the only electronic-optronic technicians dedicated to the Army, but they also support Air Force and Navy requirements. They inspect, test, diagnose faults in, adjust, repair, recondition and modify electrical, electro-mechanical, electronic, electro-optic and mechanical equipment, optical instruments, and control systems for weapons and missiles. EO TECH(L)s also repair surveillance and thermal observation systems. They maintain vehicle satellite navigation systems, fibre-optic systems, and optical, electrical and electronic test equipment, and repair and maintain LASER systems, portable and trailer-mounted power-generating systems.

Qualification Requirements

EO TECH(L)s must be responsible, independent individuals with a high level of technical aptitude and a strong interest in electronic equipment work.

Training

The first stage of training for all new recruits is the Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course held at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

On successful completion of BMQ, EO TECH(L)s go to a Military Training Centre for the 10-week Soldier Qualification (SQ) course.

Professional training for EO TECH(L)s begins with the Performance-Oriented Electronic Training (POET) course, which takes about 26 weeks and is given at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics in Kingston, Ontario.

Upon completion of the POET course, EO TECH(L)s spend 33 weeks at the Canadian Forces School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at Canadian Forces Base Borden, Ontario. Training time may be reduced for those with proof of civilian qualifications. Using a combination of theory instruction, demonstrations and practical work, it includes the following material: basic electrical and electronic theory, repair of electrical and electronic equipment, basic optical and optronic theory, basic computer theory and architecture, and repair of night-observation devices and surveillance equipment.

Working Environment

EO TECH(L)s posted to a base normally work in enclosed workshops that are lighted and heated. During field training and on operations in the field, EO TECH(L)s generally work in temporary or improvised accommodations, or outdoors where they may be exposed to extreme environmental and climatic conditions for extended periods.

Working conditions typically include poor ventilation, confined work areas, and exposure to loud noise, heat, dust and fumes. Normal levels of mental stress are found when employed on a base, but stress increases considerably when on exercise or deployed on operations.

Opportunities For Advancement

EO TECH(L)s who display the ability and knowledge required to excel may be selected for Advanced Training at the Supervisor and Manager levels.
Qualified technicians who are ambitious and capable will find excellent opportunities for progression and promotion. EO TECH(L)s are employed at bases and stations across Canada and on deployed operations around the world.
