In less than two years, thousands of our country's best and brightest will set their sights on Nova Scotia as we host the 2011 Canada Winter Games. More than 3,600 athletes, coaches and managers from across Canada, 400 media, 700 VIPs, 500 officials and thousands of visitors will head east for the two-week event. Featuring 20 sports and numerous cultural events and festivals, the Games will be the largest event in Halifax's history, and our first time hosting the Canada Winter Games.
Duties:
Reporting to the Director of Communications and Community Relations, the Language Services Coordinator will provide coordination, integration, planning, development and operations support regarding language services for the Host Society. The successful candidate will work closely with volunteers and staff to ensure the Games meet Canada's official language requirements. Specific accountabilities include:
- Building relationships with the Acadian and Francophone community
- Coordinating the day to day operation of the Language Services Division
- Coordinating all language services requirements for the Games including translation and proofreading, public awareness, media and communications, information and resources, interpretation and presentations and community relations in both French and English
- Liaising with all staff and volunteers to ensure that duality of services is respected prior to and throughout the Games
- Advising on issues and questions relating to Language Services requirements
- Developing and implementing language training plan for staff and volunteers
- Supervising the Translation Team
- Assists with the organization of special projects where language services are required
- Sensitizing staff members and volunteers of the Host Society about the importance of both official languages
Qualifications:
Our ideal candidate has completed post-secondary education in a related field and brings two (2) years of related experience in the development of French language programs/services, coordinating translation, and/or project management. An acceptable equivalent of education and experience will be considered. The ability to communicate fluently (written and oral) in English and French is essential for this position. Our successful candidate has advanced organizational, planning, consulting, and presentation skills. He/she is team oriented, attentive to detail, and results driven. Experience in a not-for-profit, Games, or sport environment; and, an undergraduate degree in French are considered assets for the position.
The successful candidate may be required to work varied hours as needed to support the planning and delivery of the Games.

Compensation for this position includes a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. This is a term opportunity, with an anticipated start date of December 2009 and end date in the winter of 2011.
