The Knowledge Industry

Greater Moncton's information technology firms are a strong and growing part of our region's economic base. Companies in this sector offer a variety of products and services ranging from leading edge electronic commerce applications to one of the most comprehensive IT training infrastructures in Atlantic Canada. High technology manufacturing and innovative new language translation services can also be found.

Significant progress is being made towards establishing relationships among the players in the knowledge Industry in Greater Moncton with well attended Cybersocial throughout the year. This business and social event is for all Knowledge Industry (K.I.) professionals, as well as companies interacting in the K.I. sector. Guests are able to network, discuss mutual challenges, exchange ideas and share experience & knowledge. These events provided the impetus for the Greater Moncton Knowledge Industry Network (GMKIN), a working group for companies from the region to come together in a more organized fashion.

Customer Contact Centres are also part of the "knowledge Industry" and continue to represent a mainstay of the economy with significant growth from within as well as a new additions.

Greater Moncton breaks the "mold" when it comes to Customer Contact Centres. With approximatley 40 call centre of various sizes and business types, employing over 6000 individuals, Greater Moncton is not your average community. But companies are still choosing to relocate or expand their call centre operations in Greater Moncton with great success. They still have the confidence that Greater Moncton can deliver the goods i.e. an available, highly skilled, dedicated workforce and in a very cost competitive environment. The New Brunswick Customer Contact Industry Association (NBCCCIA) has been instrumental in positioning "customer contact centres" as a viable career option in this market and a great stepping stone to other careers in these high profile companies. The existing centres are raising the bar in the working environments. Many of these centres are state-of-the-art, ergonomic, nurturing places to work. The infrastructure ranges from corporate to down right "funky".

Manufacturing & Distribution

The region also has a growing manufacturing sector and is an excellent Distribution Hub. Being the geographic center of Atlantic Canada, it is the most efficient location from which to serve local, regional, national and international markets.

This geographic advantage has also help the Greater Moncton International Airport become the fastest growing airport in Atlantic Canada and the only airport in the East served by all three domestic carriers. At a cost of over $20 million, the new terminal building opened in October 2002 and the airport was given International status at that time. The new terminal facility and related infrastructure was built with the goal of establishing the airport as Atlantic Canada's choice Aviation gateway.
