| Acadia’s History |
| Acadia University was founded in 1838. Originally called Queen’s College, at its conception the new institution was the largest college in the Maritime colonies with 21 students. After three years the name was changed to Acadia College and began to grow and take shape. Rejecting the social and intellectual elitism of the day, the aim of Acadia’s founders was to provide a sound, practical program, within the reach of the average Maritime youth. On June 16, 1843 Acadia College conferred its first degrees. |

| Vision for the future |
Our faculty’s commitment to its students and
pride in the university’s reputation mean they are
continuously engaged in developing nationally
and internationally recognized research initiatives.
Acadia is renowned as a centre of research
excellence, with the world-class K.C. Irving
Environmental Science Centre anchoring our
network of labs and research centres.Acadia achieves and sustains a strong culture of academic inquiry and innovation by building on outstanding individual skills in its researchers, by maintaining focus on its core research disciplines, and increasingly, by facilitating a more collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to research initiatives. In addition, Acadia offers its students a technology rich teaching and learning environment. The undergraduate students at Acadia are provided with notebook computers and a sophisticated support network when they first enter the university. This transforms the undergraduate experience by producing graduates who are highly proficient in the use of modern technology with a depth of experience working with primary research data, and thus extremely well prepared for careers in research or application. | What we are proud of |
Canadian opinion leaders consistently rank Acadia University ahead of
other undergraduate universities for its innovation and development of
tomorrow's leaders. Equipping students with the tools they need to
succeed in life is part of our commitment to academic excellence.
Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills are just
some of the results - results that our graduates applaud!
Our students find the Acadia environment to be rich and rewarding. And, our Alumni are the proof as they accomplish important research and pursue outstanding careers worldwide. Acadia has been named Canada's best overall primarily undergraduate university according to Maclean's magazine 2007 ranking. In addition, Acadia had a strong showing in the Globe and Mail University Report Card 2007, with a series of grades any student would be proud of - an A+ for class sizes, and straight A's for quality of technology, student-faculty interaction, campus atmosphere. The university was also cited as one of the "highest-rated" by students in the areas of athletic, easy-going, tech-savvy, and environmentally-conscious. Acadia's technology environment, known as the Acadia Advantage program, was honoured in April 1999 when Acadia became a laureate of the Smithsonian Institution. The only Canadian institution selected for inclusion in the Education and Academia category of the prestigious Computerworld Smithsonian Award, Acadia's submission is now part of the permanent research collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. In September 2008, the University will launch Acadia Advantage 2.0, the next evolution of learning at the University.
