Acadia’s History

Acadia University was founded in 1838. Originally called Queen’s College, at its conception the new institution was the largest college in the Maritime colonies with 21 students. After three years the name was changed to Acadia College and began to grow and take shape. Rejecting the social and intellectual elitism of the day, the aim of Acadia’s founders was to provide a sound, practical program, within the reach of the average Maritime youth. On June 16, 1843 Acadia College conferred its first degrees.
